Testing Summer and Fall Catalog Native iOS App
Challenge
A custom floor covering company created a native iOS mobile application for their summer catalog to be used by interior designers when working with clients. The catalog consisted of floor covering products, professional photography, videos, design advice, design tools, and My Favorites section. The mobile app also had a one-of-a-kind share your favorites functionality connecting the user with the brand community in real-time. The in-app shopping cart connected to the public website for flooring purchases.
Solution
To protect the mobile app from public access during pre-launch testing, the application was only downloaded to specific approved iPad devices in SPR’s testing lab. The testing team prioritized and then created test cases based on business risk and ROI due to tight schedules. A testing checklist format was used in order to get fast and consistent coverage across multiple iterations. Due to the complexity of the application, testing was done in multiple iterations to provide quick feedback to the development team. At the start of each iteration, a smoke test was run to check the readiness of the app’s build for testing. Regression testing was performed in order to confirm that bug fixes did not produce additional bugs elsewhere in the app. If bug fixes did produce new bugs, they were uncovered using this testing approach.
Result
Each testing iteration uncovered significant issues. The QA team found high severity bugs such as issues with the shopping cart and the on-screen calculator. Based on SPR's clear and detailed bug reporting, the development team was able to quickly resolve the issues before the live launch. Having SPR as part of the project team allowed the developers to deliver a creative mobile app that was thoroughly tested on multiple iOS and physical iPad devices.
